Curriculum

Our approach to the curriculum is underpinned by current research and statutory documentation, such as the National Curriculum for Key stage One and the EYFS framework which covers Nursery and Reception age pupils.  We aim to ensure that our children will be well-rounded individuals who are prepared for the next stage of their journey. We promote compassion, mutual understanding, integrity and a pursuit of excellence in order for our children to reach their potential and make a positive contribution to the wider world. Our enquiry-based approach helps our children to make links and connections in their knowledge and skills,  whilst giving them a voice and agency for change.

We aim for our children to have a deep and meaningful understanding of the disciplinary (subject specific knowledge) and substantive (key information) knowledge contained within each subject.  Our curriculum is carefully designed through our enquiry drivers which are history (autumn term) geography (spring term) and the arts (summer term.) Each enquiry is enhanced by other subjects such as personal and social development or religious education, which allows our children to explore the enquiry questions from different perspectives.

Our knowledge-rich curriculum is underpinned by our core curriculum principles. Children explore these ideas throughout the curriculum, revisiting them in a wide range of contexts and through the lens of different subjects. Our curriculum aims to provide inclusive and aspirational environments where learners thrive and build the cultural capital they need to make aspirational choices for their future.

Each of our enquiries takes our WORLD principles into consideration.  We encourage our children to know more and remember more. However, understanding how and when to use their knowledge requires wisdom.  We have carefully planned opportunities for children to have first-hand experiences both in and out of school which enrich their learning and provide additional context.  We think about relationships in learning, with our peers and the wider world.  Language and literacy opportunities are carefully planned from progressive vocabulary used in our teaching to the texts we expose our pupils to.  We think deeply about the diversity in our world, from the biodiversity our planet offers to the idea of mutual respect and tolerance needed to be a global citizen.
